How to Start Training Nogi Jiu Jitsu and What to Expect

Principles for Success in Jiu-Jitsu

10th Planet jiu jitsu

Nogi Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art focusing on ground fighting without using a traditional uniform or "gi". When embarking on your jiu-jitsu journey, it's crucial to understand and embrace certain principles that will contribute to your success on the mats. This article will explore seven key principles that form the foundation for growth and progress in jiu-jitsu. If you're interested in starting Nogi Jiu Jitsu training, here are some steps to get you started and what to expect:

Be consistent and dedicated in your training.

Consistency is key in jiu-jitsu. Regularly attending classes, practicing techniques, and rolling with training partners will help you develop muscle memory, improve your reflexes, and deepen your understanding of the art.

Get into your weekly rhythm, and stick to it. Humans are creatures of habit. The more you jump around in your schedule, your game will reflect the same.

Dedication and commitment to your training will yield significant progress over time.

Start with the basics and focus on building a strong foundation.

Before diving into advanced techniques, it's essential to establish a solid understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of jiu-jitsu. Building a strong foundation will provide a solid framework to develop your skills and progress in the art.

I know your partner may do something different while we roll, but it's not what I asked you to do!

The more you add variation because you saw it on Instagram and changed the technique. The more your foundation will reflect the same, out-of-context technique. It's completely acceptable to ask questions about how to do the technique but don't worry about the partner's reactions so early. Learn how to crawl before you start sprinting.

Get the right gear

Nogi training in Jiu-Jitsu demands particular gear that is different from traditional Jiu-Jitsu. You will require a rash guard or compression shirt, grappling shorts or spats, and a mouthguard. Some gyms may additionally ask you to wear ear protection. Make sure to have your gear ready before starting your training, so that you don't feel out of place. To feel like a grappler, you should dress like one.

Embrace the learning process and be patient with yourself.

Learning jiu-jitsu is a journey that requires patience and a growth mindset. Embrace the learning process, understanding that progress may come in small increments. Be patient with yourself, as mastery takes time and effort. Trust in the process and enjoy the journey. Champions are not made in one day. The black belt is the white belt who never quit.

To start, learn the basic positions and techniques: Familiarize yourself with the fundamental positions of Nogi Jiu-Jitsu, such as the guard, mount, side control, and back control. Start learning basic techniques like escapes, submissions, and transitions.

Take care of your body and prioritize injury prevention.

Jiu-jitsu is a physically demanding martial art, and caring for your body is vital for longevity. Warm up and stretch: Before each training session, warm up your body and stretch to prevent injuries. Nogi Jiu Jitsu involves a lot of dynamic movements, so it's essential to prepare your muscles and joints. Prioritize injury prevention by warming up properly, listening to your body, and practicing good technique.

If it hurts to move, then you need to rest. Jiu Jitsu will always be there. Do not train with an injury. You can use that time to study the game and write down all the techniques you learned. Just because you're training doesn't mean you cannot study.

Additionally, incorporating strength and conditioning exercises, proper nutrition, and rest and recovery into your routine will help you stay healthy and perform at your best. Injuries are the main reason people quit in Jiu-Jitsu. Quitters never prosper.

Set realistic goals and celebrate small victories.

Setting goals in jiu-jitsu is essential for motivation and progress. However, it's crucial to set realistic and achievable goals that align with your current skill level and training frequency. Celebrate the small victories, whether successfully executing a technique or earning a promotion. Recognizing and appreciating these accomplishments will fuel your motivation and motivate you on your jiu-jitsu journey.

Setting realistic goals start with being consistent and showing up. If you can make it goal to show up on your designated dates for straight three months, that is a start.

Surround yourself with a supportive and positive jiu-jitsu community.

Being part of a supportive and positive jiu-jitsu community can make a significant difference in your journey. Surround yourself with training partners and instructors who encourage and support your growth. Engage in the jiu-jitsu community, attend seminars and events, and build relationships with fellow practitioners. The camaraderie and support within the community will enhance your experience and contribute to your success.

By incorporating these principles into your jiu-jitsu journey, you will lay a solid foundation for growth, progress, and enjoyment in the art. Remember, jiu-jitsu is not only about the techniques but also about the mindset and values that come with it. Embrace the journey, stay consistent, and enjoy the lifelong process of learning and evolving in jiu-jitsu.

Spar and roll with training partners: As you continue to train, you will get the chance to practice your techniques with a partner. This is called sparring or rolling. It's a controlled environment where you can apply what you have learned. Remember to be respectful to your partner and tap out when caught in a submission. Also, when you apply a submission, don't get too aggressive and give your partner time to tap. Respect and safety are important in training.
