For the modern professional or business owner, life often feels like a high-stakes grappling match. You are constantly fending off deadlines, managing "fires" at the office, and trying to maintain a semblance of a personal life. In the middle of this chaos, the call of the mats is strong. You want to improve your skills, clear your head, and stay in peak physical condition. But how do you fit jiu jitsu into a schedule that is already bursting at the seams?
At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance, we see it every day. We have doctors, lawyers, tech founders, and small business owners who have discovered that the discipline required for BJJ doesn't just drain their energy: it fuels their professional success. Balancing a demanding career with consistent training isn't about finding "extra" time; it’s about optimizing the time you have.
If you are ready to stop making excuses and start making progress, here are the five essential steps to balancing your career with the "gentle art."
The primary challenge isn't just physical fatigue; it is cognitive load. When you spend eight to ten hours making executive decisions, the last thing your brain wants to do is solve the complex puzzle of a high-level guard pass. Many professionals fall into the trap of "all or nothing" thinking. They believe that if they can't train five days a week like a professional competitor, they shouldn't train at all.
This mindset leads to the dreaded "burnout cycle." You train hard for two weeks, get overwhelmed at work, vanish for a month, and then feel too "out of shape" to return. To break this cycle, you need a systematic approach that treats your torrance bjj journey as a marathon, not a sprint.
The most successful professionals at our academy are those who treat their training sessions like non-negotiable board meetings. However, they also recognize that their schedules need built-in flexibility.
Quality over quantity is the golden rule. Instead of aiming for daily sessions and failing, commit to two or three high-quality classes per week. At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance, we offer a flexible class schedule that includes early morning, lunchtime, and late-evening sessions. This variety ensures that whether you’re a "morning person" who wants to roll before the first email hits your inbox or a "night owl" who needs to decompress after a long day, there is a slot for you.
The Lunchtime Power Hour: If you own your business or have a flexible office, our midday classes are a "cheat code" for productivity. Stepping away from the screen for a No-Gi session resets your brain and prevents the mid-afternoon slump.
Synchronize Your Calendar: Physically put your BJJ classes into your work calendar. This prevents colleagues from booking meetings during your training time and reinforces your commitment.
The "One-Class" Rule: On your busiest weeks, commit to attending at least one class. This maintains your "mat rhythm" and prevents the psychological hurdle of returning after a long hiatus.
Jiu Jitsu is a lifestyle, but it shouldn't be a secret life. To balance a career and BJJ, you must communicate your goals with your support system: both at home and at work.
If your family understands that bjj torrance is your primary source of stress relief and health, they are more likely to support your time on the mats. Likewise, if your business partners see the increased focus and discipline you bring back from the gym, they will view your training as an asset rather than a distraction.
For those just starting out: our "perfect white belts": transparency is key. Explain to your employer that this training is part of your wellness routine. You’ll find that many high-performers actually respect the grit and accountability required to train at a place like 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance.
When you only have three hours a week to train, you cannot afford to "mindlessly roll." You must maximize every second of your mat time. This means arriving early to warm up, staying focused during technique demonstrations, and having a specific goal for every sparring session.
At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance, our coaches foster a supportive environment where detail-oriented instruction is the priority. Whether you are learning the fundamentals of the "Master of the White Belt" curriculum or you are an experienced blue belt looking to upgrade your No-Gi and leg-lock skills for the modern meta, intentionality is what separates the hobbyist from the technician.
Set a Weekly Goal: Decide on one position or submission you want to work on. Perhaps this week is all about "back control" or "escapes."
Ask Questions: Our coaches are here to help you bridge the gap between confusion and mastery. Don't leave the mat with a question unanswered.
Focus on High-Percentage Moves: In a limited schedule, prioritize techniques that work across all body types and skill levels. This is the hallmark of the 10th Planet system.

One of the biggest advantages of the 21st-century grappler is the ability to improve without being physically present at the gym. For the busy professional, off-mat learning is the "secret sauce" for rapid improvement.
During your commute through the South Bay or while waiting for a conference call to start, you can engage in mental rehearsals or study technical footage. This keeps the neural pathways associated with BJJ active, even when your body is at a desk.
For the experienced practitioners coming from Gi-based schools, this is the perfect time to dive into our No-Gi jiu jitsu instructionals. Understanding the "Dark Arts" of leg locks and the systematic approach popularized by Eddie Bravo will give you a significant technical edge when you finally step back onto the mats.

There will be weeks when a major project goes sideways, a child gets sick, or your body simply needs a rest. This is where most people quit. They feel "guilty" for missing class and allow that guilt to morph into a total cessation of training.
Be kind to yourself. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance is a community, not a courtroom. We aren't here to judge you for missing a week; we are here to welcome you back when you return. Consistency over a decade is infinitely more valuable than intensity over a month.
Understand that your progress may look different than someone who trains twice a day. Your "wins" might be more subtle: a more efficient escape, better breath control under pressure, or simply the fact that you showed up when you were tired. These are the victories that build the "mind-body connection" and fortify your mental health against the stresses of a high-pressure career.
Why is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance the ideal home for the busy professional? It comes down to the culture. We have moved away from the rigid, often intimidating atmosphere of "old school" martial arts schools. Instead, we offer a friendly, ego-free environment where the CEO and the college student are equals on the mat.
Our focus on No-Gi training is also a practical choice for professionals. There is no heavy Gi to wash and dry every night, making your gear management much simpler. Plus, the techniques we teach are highly relevant to modern competitive standards seen on FloGrappling and the ADCC stage, ensuring you are learning the most effective version of the art.
1. Am I too old or out of shape to start BJJ?
Absolutely not. Many of our most dedicated students started in their 30s, 40s, or 50s. We focus on safety and longevity, ensuring you can train hard today and still show up for work tomorrow. Check out our About Us page to learn more about our philosophy.
2. How do I prevent injuries that might interfere with work?
At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance, we emphasize "technical rolling" and safety. Our coaches supervise all sparring sessions to ensure a controlled environment. We also recommend supplementary weight training to strengthen joints and muscles.
3. What if my work schedule changes frequently?
Our diverse class times allow you to pivot. If you miss a morning class, you can often catch an evening session. Our community is built on flexibility because we know life happens.
4. Is No-Gi better for beginners?
No-Gi is often more intuitive for beginners and eliminates the "grip fighting" that can be tough on the fingers of professionals who need to type or perform delicate tasks (like surgeons or dentists).
Think of your BJJ membership not as an expense, but as an investment in your human capital. The resilience, problem-solving skills, and stress management you develop at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Torrance will pay dividends in your professional life.
When you can remain calm while someone is trying to submit you, a demanding client or a missed quarterly goal suddenly seems much more manageable. You aren't just learning to fight; you are learning to thrive under pressure.
If you are serving the LA South Bay area and are ready to take the first step, we invite you to experience our supportive environment firsthand. Whether you're an absolute novice looking for a white belt workshop or an experienced grappler ready to evolve, your spot on the mat is waiting.
